How to switch from iPad to Remarkable Paper Pro

The iPad is undeniably great if you want a bright, portable screen for browsing the web and watching video, but the rationale for using one really starts to falter if you’re easily distracted or value a tactile, hands-on approach to writing. If you’ve decided to jump from iPad to Markable, you’ll have a much better experience if all your books, files, and notes make the jump with you. Obviously you won’t be able to free your apps, but reMarkable Paper Pro can handle any PDF, ePub, or, for some work, Apple Notes‘ file you drop if you know what you’re doing. Here’s how to make the switch.

Transfer your files via USB-C cable

There are two main ways you can transfer files to your Markable — via a USB-C cable connection or through Markable’s mobile and desktop apps. For a wired connection, you’ll need a USB-C cable and access to your iPad’s web browser, then:

1. Connect your ReMarkable Paper Pro to your iPad over USB-C.
2. On your resume, make sure you’re in My Files, then press “hamburger menu” in 3 lines in the upper left corner.
3. Then tap Settings at the bottom of the sidebar.
4. Tap Storage.
5. change the USB web interface being prepared to continue.
6. On your iPad, go to http:////:10.11.99.1 in Safari.
7. You should see the content of your Remarkable. Tap Importthen tap Choose Files to open your iPad’s File app.
8. Select the Files you want to import and press Open.

To use the Markable mobile app on your iPad, you’ll want to make sure you’ve already connected your account to the app. Then:

1. Open it any file you want to transfer (this is very easy in the Files app).
2. Tap the share icon (the arrow comes out of the box).
3. Scroll through the apps on the sharing sheet until you see a notable icon again.
4. Tap on it and the file will be transferred.

You will need to convert your notes, and merge them into one document

Apple doesn’t offer a way to bulk delete notes from the Notes app. The company may not admit this publicly, but this seems to be at least the intention. It wants to keep you in its ecosystem, and locking your notes into the Notes app is an easy way to make switching difficult.

You can send them individually as PDFs, though, and since ReMarkable Paper Pro plays well with PDFs, this works as a nice workaround for Apple’s limitations. Before you get started, make sure you’ve identified the notes you want to share by adding a hashtag to them so they’re easy to find.

1. Open the Notes app on your iPad.
2. Tap the note want to export.
3. Tap the share icon in the top menu bar.
4. Scroll down the sharing sheet until you see Markup.
5. Tap on Bookmarks, tap Done, then Save File To…and Save.
6. Repeat until you have submitted all your notes.

Then you’ll want to combine the PDFs you’ve exported into a single document or “notebook” that you can import into your Notepad.

1. Open the Files app.
2. Tap Select.
3. Click on the PDFs you want to combine.
4. Tap More…
5. Then tap Create a PDF.
6. Transfer the PDF to your Remarkable using one of the methods above.

Once your PDFs, ePubs, and converted notes are in your Markable you can edit, annotate, and add pages to them as you wish. You can also organize your old notes with tags so they’re easy to find when you’re looking for them in your ReMarkable Paper Pro.

There’s no denying that it takes a lot of work to move things from your iPad to your ReMarkable Paper Pro. Once you’ve done the work, you’ll feel more focused and free of distractions.
