Trade in an old phone for credit
Google / Pocket-lint
Most major phone makers offer some sort of trade-in program that gives you credit toward a new purchase when you turn in an old device that can be repaired and resold or recycled. These trade-in deals aren’t always generous (you can make a lot of money doing the hard work of trading in your phone), but they’re usually pretty easy. Google even sends you a trade-in box to ship your device, something not all companies offer.
In the case of the current Pixel trade-in, Google is also generous with its trade-in credit, which almost covers the cost of the Pixel 9 if you combine your trade-in with the current Black Friday sale. Here’s how much credit you’ll get for trading in the latest Pixel phone:
- $699 for the Pixel 8 Pro
- $490 for the Pixel 8
- $760 for the Pixel Fold
- $540 for the Pixel 7 Pro
- $360 for the Pixel 7
- $300 for the Pixel 7a
- $450 for the Pixel 6 Pro
- $300 for the Pixel 6
If you trade in an iPhone instead, you could get close to the same amount to spend on your new Pixel lifestyle. To give you an idea of how much Google will pay for an Apple device, here is a price breakdown of iPhone 15 series:
- $720 for iPhone 15 Pro Max
- $600 for the iPhone 15 Pro
- $540 for iPhone 15 Plus
- $480 for iPhone 15
You’ll only get full credit for any of these devices if they’re in “good condition,” which Google defines as being able to turn it on, have no cracks, and have a working screen. However, trading in an old device is a great option. If you’re moving from the Pixel 8 to the Pixel 9, you’ll only pay about $159 for your new phone. Moving from the iPhone 15 to the Pixel 9 will cost you $169. If you go from Pixel Fold to Pixel 9, you will pay nothing and Google will pay $111. There is no world where this trade is not worth it at those prices.
Use the Google One discount to get a refund
Google / Pocket-lint
Google One, a subscription service that Google offers if you need more cloud storage or want extended AI features in the company’s apps, also includes a 10% return credit on purchases you make in the Google Store. If you have a Google One account, you’ll get that back in Google Store credit that you can use on purchases you make after you get your new or foldable phone. It’s not the same thing as accepting cash in exchange, but it can be good for a case or other type of accessory.
