Google’s Gemini chatbot can now remember things like information about your life, work, and preferences.
As flagged by posters on the X, the “memory” feature has started to trickle down to some Gemini users, including this reporter. Like ChatGPT Memory, Gemini adds context to the current conversation. For example, tell Gemini to remember your favorite food and the next time you ask the bot for restaurant recommendations, it may match your suggestions to your cooking relatives.
Memory is only available to subscribers to Google’s $20-a-month Google One AI Premium plan, per 9to5Google, and hasn’t made its way into the Gemini apps on iOS and Android — just the web client.
In the Gemini UI, Google offers several examples of reminders that can be useful, such as “Use simple language and avoid jargon,” “I can only code in JavaScript,” and “When planning a trip, include the cost per day.” The company notes that the feature, which currently only supports English-language content, can be turned off at any time — but those memories are retained until manually deleted.
Memory features like ChatGPT’s and Gemini’s can be used if not carefully constructed with guardrails. Earlier this year, a security researcher discovered that hackers can secretly plant “fake” memories in ChatGPT to steal user data forever.
